Open Streets in the Inner City, Langa this summer as City, Young Urbanists team-up

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the City has teamed-up with the Young Urbanists once again to deliver Open Streets events in the Inner City and Langa this summer. The events will deliver car-free, pedestrian-friendly streets for Capetonians to enjoy in a safe, inclusive, and vibrant environment. Read more below
Every Sunday between now and March, Bree Street in the Inner City will be shut to traffic and open for pedestrians only from 10:00 – 17:00, with the event supported by the Mission for Inner City Cape Town and Safe Passage Programme by SDI Trust.
In Langa, Lerotholi Avenue and King Langalibalele Drive will be pedestrianised on the last Sunday of every month from 12:00 – 17:00 (except December). Many collaborators are working with the City and Young Urbanists to make this happen in Langa, including Langa Bicycle Hub, Tekano SA, Bridges Academy, 16 on Lerotholi, Langa Safety Patrol, Langa Community Advice Services, Project Playground, Local South, Jordan, and Ubizo Events & Tours.
‘Whenever I visit these Open Streets I am struck by how many families there are from all over Cape Town. That is the purpose of good public space – it should bring people together, not keep people out. And these Open Streets do exactly that. Families from across the city come to enjoy them, and we should all love and celebrate that.
‘We are glad to contribute funding support to this partnership with the brilliant Young Urbanists and many other collaborators. We want these open streets events to be standard features and not just once-offs in our city, where our streets and public places are used for people first.
‘I’ll be on Bree Street this Sunday and invite Capetonians to come and enjoy together with their families and friends. We also hope to see you in Langa on the last Sunday of each month for a lekker open streets vibe in one of Cape Town’s most culturally-rich neighbourhoods,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
